Still Life.
Artist: Henri Fantin-Latour
Date: 1888
Title: Roses and Lilies
Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French artist known for his exquisite still life paintings and portraits. He was born in Grenoble, France, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by the Realist and Romantic movements.
Fantin-Latour's early works were primarily portraits, including paintings of his family and friends. He also created several works that were influenced by the Romantic movement, featuring dreamy, ethereal landscapes and scenes.
However, it was his still life paintings that gained him the most recognition. Fantin-Latour's still lifes were meticulously crafted, with a focus on detail and light that created a sense of depth and dimension. He often painted floral arrangements, and his depictions of flowers were particularly renowned for their vivid colors and lifelike appearance.
Fantin-Latour exhibited his work extensively throughout his career, including at the Salon in Paris and at the Royal Academy in London. He was also friends with several notable artists of his time, including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and James McNeill Whistler.
Despite his success, Fantin-Latour was somewhat overlooked by art historians in the years following his death. However, in recent years his work has been reevaluated and recognized as a significant contribution to the world of art. Today, his paintings are held in collections at museums and galleries around the world, and he is considered one of the great masters of still life painting.
