Artist: Margaretha Roosenboom
Date: 1843-1896
Title: Peonies
Margaretha Roosenboom (1843-1896) was a Dutch painter, known for her depictions of domestic interiors and everyday life scenes. She was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and showed an early talent for art.
Roosenboom studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, where she received a rigorous training in painting and drawing. She became particularly interested in the genre of domestic scenes, and her paintings often portrayed women engaged in everyday activities such as sewing, reading, and cooking. Her works were characterized by their attention to detail and the use of light and shadow to create a sense of atmosphere.
In 1868, Roosenboom exhibited her paintings for the first time at the Triennial Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Brussels, where she was awarded a silver medal. This recognition helped to launch her career, and she went on to exhibit her works in many major exhibitions throughout Europe.
Roosenboom also taught art at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where she was one of the few female instructors. Her students included several notable Dutch artists, including Thérèse Schwartze and Lizzy Ansingh.
Roosenboom's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1896 at the age of 53. Despite her relatively short career, she left behind a significant body of work that has been celebrated for its technical skill and its ability to capture the intimate moments of everyday life. Today, her paintings can be found in many major museums and private collections in Europe and the United States.
